Custom software development

How do we avoid becoming dependent on a single provider after development?

Answer

Dependency cannot be avoided entirely with software that is specialised to your business: every new team needs onboarding and context. But it can be limited considerably. This includes rights of use and modification clarified in writing, access to the agreed source code repositories, documented build and deployment paths, separate company accounts for hosting and stores, and a defined export of data and files.

A comprehensible system is just as important: automated tests for critical rules, architecture decisions, version history, an access inventory and operating documentation that more than one person can understand. Standard components can make a handover easier, but they are no guarantee. Conversely, a proprietary component does not automatically mean unacceptable lock-in, provided that licence, data access, operation and exit are agreed transparently. That is why schukai does not make a blanket promise of “no vendor lock-in”, but states specifically which artefacts, rights and handover services each contract includes.
