Answer
An ERP is built for internal business roles and often contains more data and functions than a customer may see or needs to understand. Direct access increases risks around permissions, load, updates and usability. Internal status values such as “document blocked” or “picking run open” are also not automatically suitable messages for customers.
A portal therefore provides a controlled external view. It translates internal states into understandable, approved information and limits actions to the agreed business process. The ERP can still remain the leading system. Technically, only the required subset is provided via defined interfaces. Customers thus do not have to work in internal screens, while the company retains responsibility for data and decisions.
