App development

Does an internal company app have to be published in the public app store?

Answer

No. Android and iOS offer different routes for internal, managed or limited-distribution applications. Options include device management, closed test or organisational distribution and – depending on the platform and contract – private store provisioning. A direct download is technically not equally sensible in every environment and shifts responsibility for updates, signing and security to the company.

The choice depends on the number of users, device ownership, mobile device management, external partners and update obligations. An internal app should not become public just because the distribution route was considered too late. Conversely, special distribution is not automatically simpler: accounts, certificates, device assignment and employees leaving have to be managed. schukai therefore clarifies publication and life cycle together with the app architecture, not just shortly before the first release.
